Château Léoville Poyferré 2004
Saint Julien - 2ème Grand Cru Classé

History

In the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, a certain Jean de Moytié, Counsellor of the Bordeaux parliament and a noble bourgeois of the town, owned a beautifully sloped gravelly vineyard near the River. This place, as was the tradition, was named after its owner and thus became the “Mont-Moytié.”

Historically, the production of Mont-Moytié was among the first Médoc wines, along with the “Château de Margaux”, the “Tour de Saint-Lambert” or the “Château de La Fitte” in Pauillac and the “Château de Calon”, in Saint-Estèphe, which were all established before the period of civil war known as La Fronde (1648-1653.)

These were the first estates to appear in the Médoc parishes, which were later to become commune appellations.

Total Vineyard Surface

80 hectares around the Château.

Tasting Notes

Soil- Terroir

Being blessed with such a historical “terroir” is one thing, preserving it, even improving it, is quite another. The old Médoc saying, “A great wine is made in the vineyard” is as true at Château Léoville Poyferré today as it was in the past.

Firstly a moderate use of natural fertiliser  with humus of vegetal origin only, ensures an easy absorption by the plant and optimises the agronomic reactions of the soils.

Secondly, a permanent monitoring system of underground water movements (instalment of piezometres a decade ago), allows us to check the water supply to the vine plants.

Wine Information

Château Léoville Poyferré in the Saint Julien appellation spread over 80 hectares. The vineyards are planted on thin Garonne gravel soil with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

The harvest plan is determined by constant examinations of the grapes to ensure perfect phenolic ripeness. Harvesting is then conducted by hand, then sorted by hand before crushing. Different plots and grape varieties are vatted separately in stainless steel vats. Wines are aged in oak barrels for 18-20 months (80% new French oak). Château Léoville Poyferré and its second wine Château Moulin Riche are fined with egg white in the barrel, before blending and bottling.

Average annual production is 100,000 bottles.
